FAQ

HARDNESS TESTING

Portable hardness testers

Do I need any training to use the UCI/Leeb hardness tester correctly?

The UCI/Leeb hardness tester requires a certain training and a little of practice. Our sales representatives are always ready to provide any kind of training (email/video call). We recommend scheduling a video call right after you receive the equipment to teach you use it most effectively.

How to calibrate the hardness tester for another material?

In order to calibrate the device you will need 3 test blocks or any specimens (made from material that you create calibration for) with known hardness value (Min, Avg, Max)
In order to learn more about calibration we recommend following the instruction in the operatng manual or the video guide on our YouTube channel

Is it possible to calibrate the hardness tester if I have only two or one hardness test block or specimen with known hardness?

Yes, user can always make an adjustment to the factory calibrations using only 1 or 2 test blocks or any specimens (made from material that you create calibration for) with known hardness value (Min, Avg, Max). Please note that  1 or 2 point calibration will be less accurate than 3 point calibrations.

How to choose a load for UCI hardness tester between 10N, 50N, 98N?

Here is the detailed guide how to choose load for UCI hardness tester.

Load Description Applications
98N
(10kgf)

Special type of probe with increased load. To carry out the measurement, it is necessary to apply the load of 10 kgf (set automatically by the converter).

Low surface cleanliness requirements

– Heat-treated and cemented details.
– Measuring in grooves, on teeth, on radius surfaces.
– Measurement on the blades, on the internal surface of the pipes, openings.
50N
(5kgf)

The main probe type for solving the most tasks of hardness measurement. To carry out the measurement, it is necessary to apply the load of 5kgf (set automatically by the converter)

Medium surface cleanliness requirements.

– Heat-treated and cemented parts, for example, shafts, turbines, gears, teeth, welds, heat affected zones.
– Measuring in grooves, on teeth, in grooves, on radius surfaces.
– Measurement on the blades, on the internal surface of the pipes, openings.
10N
(5kgf)
Probe with reduced load – designed to measure the hardness of products with increased requirements for the size of the print (polished, polished surfaces), to measure the hardness of thin surface hardened layers.
For the measurement, a load of 1kMore sensible to the surface cleanliness, in comparison with U1 (50 N).
– Nitrided and cemented surface layers of molds, stamps, thin-walled parts.
– Bearings, lateral surfaces of saws teeth.
– Measurement of hardness of hardening coatings.
– Measurement on the blades, on the inner surface of the pipes, inside the holes.

If you still not sure which one to choose, please email us the photo of your metal surface, our sales representatives will assist you – [email protected]

Bench hardness testers

Do I need any training to use the Bench hardness tester correctly?

Yes, the specific training is required if you haven’t used bench hardness testers previously, our sales representatives will be eager to train you online via video call. Unfortunately the training on-site is not possible

Is it possible to order a Bench hardness tester with a different indenter/test blocks?

The standard indenters/test blocks are included in the delivery scope with the equipment and there is no option of changing, but it is possible to order custom or different indenter/test blocks separately. Please let us know which accessories you require so that we can check the availability for you.

Shore hardness testers

Do I need any training to use the Shore hardness tester correctly?

Our Shore hardness testers are user friendly and the operation is pretty self-explanatory, the operation manual will provide you with the all the necessary details, but if you still have some questions or do not understand how to use the equipment, be free to contact our sales representatives via email – [email protected]

Does TS-A/TS-C measure in Brinell/Rockwell/Vickers scales?

No, TS-A/TS-C measures the Shore indentation hardness (HA or HD) of non-metallic materials such as polymers, elastomers and rubbers.

Does TS-A/TS-C include a test stand?

TS-A/TS-C do not include a test stand but you can purchase a Shore Test Stand (either Shore A or Shore D) separately.

Hardness test blocks

Can I use your test blocks from carbon steel to create a calibration for another material (e.g Aluminium, Copper, etc.)?

No, the calibration for a certain material should be done only on the same material, no exceptions.

I am new to hardness testing, how many test blocks do I need to do my job?

Quantity of test blocks depends on your personal requirements, which scale do you use for measurements, and how many probes you use. If the hardness measurements of your specimen is limited and not very wide (for instance 20-35 HRC) then only 1 test block should be enough to verify the accuracy of your equipment once in a while. For wider range of hardness you may need more test blocks to test the accuracy across the whole measurement range. If you use both UCI and Leeb probes you will need an HLD or HLG test block (depends on the Leeb type probe).

ULTRASONIC TESTING

EMAT Thickness gauges

Do I need any training to use the EMAT thickness gauge correctly?

If you aren’t familiar with ultrasonic inspection and have never used ultrasonic thickenss gauges before, then you will need to a certain training in ultrasonic inspection, our company is a manufacturer and doesn’t provide a certified training, but our sales representative can teach you basic concepts and teach you how to use our device correctly.

Can I measure the thickness of metals with high temperature? If so, what is the temperature range?

Yes, our UT-3M-EMA can be equipped with a high temperature probe which can withstand the temperatures up to 600 °C.

Is it possible to adjust the measurement readings according to a specific temperature?

Yes, due to the thermal expansion the size of metal changes when increasing the temperature, and the UT-3M-EMA is able to provide correct results despite the thermal expansion. The correction of the reading is according to the standard ASTM E797 (Clause 9.5).

Ultrasonic thickness gauges

Do I need any training to use the UT-1M/UT-1M-ST/UT-1M-IP or UT-2A thickness gauge correctly?

The UT-1M/UT-1M-ST/UT-1M-IP are basic thickness gauge which are easy to use, and doesn’t require an extensive training, but our sales representatives are always ready to support with any questions.
The UT-2A will require more training since it is an advanced ultrasonic thickness gauge and the user should be familiar with A-scan and how to use it.

Can I measure the thickness of non-metallic materials (plastic or rubber) with your thickness gauge?

Yes, definitely, with a low-frequency probe 2 MHz or 2.5 MHz ( frequency depends on the material) you will be able to take necessary measurements.

Ultrasonic flaw detectors

Do I need any qualifications to use an ultrasonic flaw detector?

Qualifications are not required if you are conducting your own inspections. However, the results of ultrasonic testing are heavily dependent on your skills as an inspector. It is advisable for the test to be conducted by a qualified person in order to ensure the skill level of the inspector.

What size of internal defects can be detected?

It is not possible to say for sure how many millimeters a defect must be in order to be detectable, as this depends on various factors such as the shape of the defect, the distance from the surface (probe) to the defect, the surface roughness of the measurement surface, and the material. However, as a rough guide, it is difficult to detect internal defects smaller than 1 mm.

Calibration blocks

Can you manufacture custom calibration blocks according to a specific standard?

Yes, but firstly please send us your specifications and drawings and required qty. We will check whether we can manufacture the required specimen and provide an offer to you.

Can you manufacture a calibration block you normally manufacture but from other material?

We can, but please let us know your required quantity since we normally manufacture non-typical products in high quantity only.

COATING TESTING

Coating thickness gauges

Can you measure the thickness of coatings on wood or concrete?

This can be measured using an ultrasonic coating thickness gauge, however, NOVOTEST does not currently manufacture ultrasonic coating thickness gauges. On the other hand we can offer a destructive testing method to do this job, Coating Thickness Knife Tester NOVOTEST TPN-1 will be suitable for the job.

Can you measure the thickness of an oil film?

Yes, the Wet film combs are used for this case.
