If we restrict the use of the ultrasonic method only with detection of internal flaws of the materials, the classification of operator tasks will be the following:
1) Detection of reflectors
2) Determination of their location
3) Evaluation of the size of the reflectors
4) Determination of reflectors properties (type, orientation, etc.).
Specialists use “discontinuity” instead of “reflector”. This term is defined as “abnormality in the structure of the testing object, presumably a defect“. In fact, only after the positioning, analysis and evaluation, operator can determine if there really is a flaw, which effects the use of the tested object.
So, the term “discontinuity” is always used, while there is no certainty that the detected reflector is an unacceptable failure, ie, it is a “defect”.
